Episode 3 - Vaishali

Vaishali was the capital city of the ancient Licchavi Clan during the time of the Buddha.

Siddhartha stayed in Vaishali shortly after exiting his father’s palace, and would return more than once, as a teacher and healer, after his great awakening.

Kolhua

Kolhua is situated about 65 kms north-west of Patna in Muzaffarpur district, where Mauryan emperor Ashoka, ‘the great’ had erected monolithic, polished sandstone pillar, consisting of a circular shaft, surmounted by a decorative bell shaped capital, supporting a life-size figure of a lion facing of north.

Buddha's Relic Stupa

There are two stupas, Stupa 1 and Stupa 2 which are named based on their discovery and excavation. Both of them have the ashes of Lord Buddha preserved in stone caskets.

Kesariya Stupa

The original Kesariya stupa probably dates to the time of Ashoka (circa 250 BCE). The stupa may even have been inaugurated earlier, as it corresponds in many respects to the description of the stupa erected by the Licchavis of Vaishali shortly after the death of the Buddha to house the alms bowl he gave them.
